Three Peaks Cyclocross Blog

A personal blog and pointer to all I find on the www about the 3 Peaks Cyclocross

A late September morning in 1985

Simon Scarsbrook’s photo I spotted on Facebook from 1985 makes me pensive. On the one hand, it looks so old, so unfamiliar… no helmet, the cars, the upside-down bikes strapped to roof racks, but it’s chillingly very familiar too. The autumn morning outside the pretty timeless Helwith Bridge Bunkhouse… it could be 2016 in many respects.

Just found a photo, looking a tad apprehensive, before my first 3 Peaks in 1985. This is probably about half an hour before the start (a bit more casual in those days methinks). In the background is the late, great, Graham Peddie, sporting a pair of calf length socks way ahead of their time! I can’t see his bike here and can’t remember if he had removed the rack and lights (chances are not). Also in shot is the Mini Moke that the Roberts brothers drove up from Brighton in, with their bikes in a trailer. I remember waving to them on the M1, them sitting almost on the ground, with the roof off. Team DS, John Eglington of the Redhill is searching for something in his Spyder(?). It was very hot, and I remember ambulances on Penyghent lane picking up collapsed riders. John Egg leant me his Pearsons for the day.
