Westmorland Gazette 2016 report

Bit of a brief report but a large picture and headline, anyway, for 2016’s race. The lakeland paper has traditionally run quite a few large reports over the years but like many local papers it seems to be ebbing away? Maybe my pessimism. hmmmm.

Anyway – the headline reminds me of a classic local paper tale about my friend when I was in my early 20s. John had been sitting by the river Lune and seen a canoeist in trouble. Fully clothed, John dived into the freezing water and tried his hardest to get this canoeist to safety. His own life was at risk and he sadly failed, and the canoeist died.  After the inquest, the Gazette’s headline was “Unemployed man failed to save drowning woman“.  Nice.  That’s maybe where my pessimism comes from.
