The Recce – the art of the 3 Peaks Cyclo-cross

First in a short series of help and tips aimed at new and returning 3 Peaks riders, I’m looking at the art of RECONNAISANCE and how a pre-ride, or more specifically a ride and walk combo, can help you get the most from the race.

My favourite / most bang-for-your-buck recce is a ride based around Blea Moor, the descent of Whernside, and Horton Scar Lane. This allows you to ride ALL of the permissable off road (other parts of the race are out of bounds outside of racers on race day) – you can view the route here https://www.komoot.com/tour/3200226426

Bikes were stashed and locked at the head of the Blea Moor bridleway and we walked for about ten minutes up the footpath and back.

We parked in Horton in Ribblesale.

The (longer, non-bike) other recces I recommend:

  • 🚶‍♀️‍➡️ Full Walk of Whernside from Chapel le Dale
  • 🚶‍♀️‍➡️Walk up and down Ingleborough from Cold Cotes
  • 🚴‍♀️Ride a circuit of Ingleborough on the road, clockwise, from and to Helwith Bridge va Cold Cotes.
