Rich Seipp had a pop at the best recorded singlespeed time a few years ago but despite good prep had some sad mechanicals. This year after a few years away, he thought he’d go one notch dafter and try the race on a fixed gear. His time is understood to be the fastest someone’s ridden the race on fixed, but as you can imagine, it was quite a trial…
The road section towards Horton isn’t ideal on a fixed gear, that is it never feels like the right one. I was either hauling the bars out of the saddle or spinning furiously. The maximum speed equated to the cranks turning at just over 180rpm.

Chapeaux though… I like these tales of derring-do in a race that oozes it in any case.
Read his blog: Sometimes Rides Bikes: The 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross again? Aye, go on then.
