I’ve been through so many changes with the bikes since my first event in 1995, and for my 26th start at the 3 Peaks this year, I reckon I’ve got more things right than I ever have in the previous editions. Just an accumulation of tiny refinements that you pick up over the years. I’ve also ditched – possibly permanently – my riding the race on the lovely titanium Pickenflick that I have used so many years on the trot. The availability of decent quick-release wheels in my garage, and various other faff-related things meant that it’s easier for me to get a decent 3 Peaks bike together from one of my lovely ‘cross racing bikes.
I’ve been a couple of excellent test rides now and I’m so happy with it. But is it perfect? Is it hell. It never is. It’s the 3 Peaks.
